There are many different render types and finishes, and choosing which one to use on your home can sometimes be challenging. Tyrolean render is popular because of its textured and beautiful finish.

But what is Tyrolean render? Continue reading to find out more.

What is Tyrolean Render?

Tyrolean render is a type of decorative render that results in a pebbled-like and weathered texture, whose name derives from the traditional building processes used in Austria, namely the Tyrol region.

Tyrolean render has been used around the world for decades as a technique to cover up poor-quality surfaces. Tyrolean render is a cement-based render that is mixed with either silicone, polymer, monocouche render or sand.

Application of Tyrolean Render

Tyrolean render comes in a dry white power that is mixed with water. It is mainly applied using a tyrolean gun tool, a compressor-powered render gun or an open-hopper spraying machine.

To mix the tyrolean render, you need a trough or wheelbarrow, water, a trowel, a pressure sprayer, and a concrete mixer (for large amounts of render).

  • Fill up the trough or wheelbarrow with the recommended amount of water.
  • Mix the render mixture into the water with the trowel.
  • Let the powder mixture settle, and then mix it with the water.

Once the render is mixed properly with the water and looks like a cement slurry, the following steps include:

  1. Clean the surface:
Clean the surface by removing any spiderwebs or debris.
  2. Test the application:
Test the application by filling the machine with the render mixture and spraying it on a piece of cardboard to check that you have the correct grain size and spray pressure.
  3. Application of render: To ensure that the render is applied evenly on the surface, move the machine at an even distance from the surface and turn the spindle or handle at a steady speed. It would also be a good idea to have somebody helping you load the machine so you don’t have to keep stopping and starting. The same amount of render mixture should be loaded into the machine each time to ensure the render is even.
  4. Two coats:
Apply 3-6 coats of the tyrolean render to the surface.

Benefits of Tyrolean Render

The benefits of tyrolean render include:

  • Covers up imperfections:
Tyrolean render is often applied to surfaces that have already been rendered or painted to cover up or fill in any cracks that might appear on the surface.
  • Different colours:
Coloured dyes can be added to the water and then mixed with the render mixture. Many different colours can be added to the tyrolean render.
  • Decorative finish:
After the tyrolean render has been applied, it results in a beautiful, weathered appearance with pebbled or honeycomb-shaped patterns
  • Protection:
It protects the home from the elements (rain and snow).

Things to Consider

Some of the things to consider before using tyrolean render include:

  • Repairing tyrolean render:
Trying to repair a tyrolean rendered wall can be tricky, especially for coloured render, as it can result in a messy look.
  • Using masonry paint:
You can use masonry paint to paint over the tyrolean render, which gives it a professional look. However, this may be pricey.
  • Using paint:
It can be difficult to use both paint and tyrolean render, as the render doesn’t always bond well with paint. It’s important to be patient and to apply the paint slowly so that it results in an even finish.
  • Applying in certain conditions:
The best conditions to apply tyrolean render are dry, mild conditions. Avoid applying the render in wet or humid conditions, as that can cause the render to dry slower and unevenly.
  • More prone to cracking:
This type of render is more prone to cracking as it requires multiple layers of application, which can lead to cracks over time after exposure to the elements.
