Stucco Rendering
Stucco rendering has a more rough, distinctive finish than other rendering options and is quite distinctive. It has been used since ancient times and the Middle Ages for both exterior and interior surfaces, and it has become a popular design feature in modern times.

What is Stucco Rendering?
Stucco rendering is a render that is made of lime, sand, pebbles, and cement. It is rough in appearance and very distinctive looking. It is also known as pebble dash or roughcast.
The mixture generally uses small pebbles to create a smaller, finer textured look. In contrast, larger pebbles are used for a more wild textured appearance.
Types of Finishes
The types of stucco rendering finishes include:
- Smooth stucco: Includes sanding multiple layers of stucco to create a smooth and clean appearance, which is especially popular in modern homes and designs.
- Santa Barbara: A smooth and slightly textured finish is achieved by applying a thin stucco layer with sand or pebbles to resemble limestone. This finish originated in Santa Barbara, California.
- Cat face: A mix of smooth and rough stucco finishes created by applying layers of stucco with different pebble and sand sizes to create an interesting finish.
- Sand or float: This involves a mixture of sand and stucco to create a more subtle texture. Different textures can easily be created, and it’s perfect for hiding any imperfections.
- Lace: Achieved by applying a base layer of stucco and then using a tool like a trowel to create patterns. Results in a lace-like texture.
- Scraped: Use a scraper or trowel on a thin layer of wet stucco render, which creates a flat surface.
- Dash: This finish is achieved by applying the render with a machine, sprayer or a dash brush, which results in a thick pattern.
- Worm: Using a comb or a trowel to create grooves or lines in the render.
Benefits of Stucco Render
The benefits of using stucco rendering include:
- Low maintenance: Stucco does not need to be coloured or painted. All you have to do is hose down the surface every now and then to keep it clean and free from debris.
- Durable: Stucco’s rough texture makes it incredibly durable and able to withstand all weather conditions, including extreme ones.
- Fire-resistant: It is a naturally fire-resistant material.
- Energy efficient: Stucco provides insulation that can help you save energy during winter and summer (less need for heating or air conditioning).
- Aesthetics: There are many different stucco finishes that can be created, including various patterns, textures and colours, which can suit a wide array of architectural designs.
Disadvantages of Stucco Rendering
The disadvantages of stucco rendering include:
- Incompatible: Stucco rendering may not be compatible with all surfaces or weather conditions.
- Cost: More materials and labour are required to apply stucco rendering, which means it is more expensive than other rendering options.
- Damage: Stucco rendering is prone to cracking over time due to its natural setting. It can also be more susceptible to water damage.
How to Apply Stucco Render
- Prepare the wall: Make sure the surface is free of any debris, clean and smooth before applying the render.
- Mixing the render: Mix the stucco render mixture together by hand or with a machine, making sure it is smooth and free of lumps.
- Apply a scratch coat: Use a trowel to apply the first layer in an even layer. Let it sit and set for around 48 hours before applying the next coat.
- Apply the brown coat: Use a trowel or darby to apply the brown coat. Let it set for about a week.
- Apply the final coat: This is where a textured finish can be applied using various tools and methods.
- Curing: Let the stucco render set for about 28 days. During this time, it should be kept moist so it doesn’t crack. Use a water sprayer to mist the wall gently.
