What is the Best Render to Use On a Garden Wall?
Cement render is the best render option for a garden wall due to its cost-effectiveness, durability, and versatility. It is also highly customisable; you can add textures, patterns, and colours to match your garden or add a unique design touch that gives your outdoor space the ‘wow’ factor.
Lime and polymer renders are also good options for garden walls due to their breathability, durability and water-resistant properties.
The Tools You Need to Render Your Garden Wall
Here is everything you’ll need to render your garden wall:
- The render mixture
- Water
- Bucket
- Brush
- Sponge
- Trowel
- Plastering hawk
- Stiff-bristled broom or brush
- Paint roller
- Drop sheet (to protect surroundings)
- An electric mixer (if you can’t mix the render yourself)
- A wooden plank for levelling
- Protective gear (goggles, gloves, and overalls)
How to Apply Render to a Garden Wall
Step 1: Protecting the Surrounding Area
Lay down drop sheets around the garden wall to protect the surrounding area from any render splatters.
Step 2: Remove Older Render
If your garden wall has an older render, it’s best to remove it before applying the new render.
Grab a hammer and chisel and chisel away at the old render until it’s removed from the wall.
Step 3: Preparing the Wall
Use a stiff-bristled broom or brush to remove loose debris, dust or dirt. If the wall is extra dirty, use a power washer or a hose and brush, as well as a mild detergent, to remove as much debris as possible.
Step 4: Repairing the Wall (If Needed)
If you notice any cracks or holes in the wall, this is the time to repair them. If the holes are small enough, you can fix them yourself by using a patching compound and a trowel or putty knife.
If the hole is bigger than you thought, it’s best to contact a professional rendering company to avoid any structural damage.
Step 5: Preparing the Render Mixture
Following the manufacturer’s instructions, mix the render mixture manually or by using an electric mixer. Ensure that it has a clay-like texture that is lump-free.
If you use an electric mixer, clean it up straight away so it doesn’t become damaged.
Step 6: Apply the First Layer
Scoop up some render using a trowel and apply it to the wall as evenly as possible at a 45-degree angle.
To ensure that your render is as stable as possible, using a rendering mesh is a must. Lay the rendering mesh on top of the wet layer of the render, ensuring it’s smooth and flat.
Step 7: Apply the Second Layer
Apply a slightly thicker second layer over the rendering mesh, starting from the centre of the wall.
Step 8: Smooth Out the Render
Depending on how thick you want the render, you can apply as many layers to the wall as you like.
Use a straight-edge or wooden panel to smooth out the layers of the render.
Step 9: Paint and Final Touches
Once the second or third layer has completely dried, you can choose a finish for the wall. Add a coloured render, texture or pattern to the garden wall to make it stand out and liven up your outdoor space.
Step 10: Maintaining Rendered Garden Wall
To ensure that your garden wall lasts as long as possible, clean it regularly and repair any cracks or holes as soon as you notice them. If you notice the paint fading, spruce it up with another layer of paint.
Some Additional Design Options
- Make it a hanging plant wall: Hang some plants on railings and hooks to create a hanging plant wall that offers privacy and an urban nature touch.
- Climber plants: Add pops of colour with some climbing plants like Bougainvillea.
- Mix materials: Mix textures and colours for an eye-catching garden wall. Add plants, climbers or wooden panelling to bring some nature to the wall.
