Tips for Maintaining Cement Rendered Walls and Surfaces
With the proper maintenance and upkeep, cement rendering can last for decades, saving you lots of money in the long run and keeping your house, walls and surfaces looking nice and fresh. Carrying out regular maintenance on your rendering is a simple process and as long as you keep it up, your rendering will last for many years without having to be fixed or redone.
So, how do you maintain your cement-rendered surfaces?
Cleaning Solutions/Liquids
Most household cleaning solutions and mild detergents are safe to use on cement-rendered surfaces. One recommended cleaning solution is CCS Citric Cleaner which is a water-based, heavy-duty cleaner that is specifically formulated to clean concrete surfaces. It effectively removes oil, grease and hydrocarbons.
Pressure Cleaner/Vacuum Pump Sprayer
Using pressure cleaners and a mild detergent is usually the most effective way to clean your rendered surfaces. If you don’t have access to a pressure cleaner then a vacuum pump sprayer is another good option.
Although a pressure cleaner is considered the best way to remove dirt and stains from your rendered surfaces, there is a risk that you could use too much pressure and cause damage to the rendering. Make sure that your pressure cleaner is on the fan setting rather than the jet one, and that you hold it far enough from the surface you’re spraying.
Mould and Mildew Removal
Mould and mildew tend to grow in damp and humid areas. Mould spores thrive and grow after being exposed to rendered coatings and dirt on surfaces. It can be difficult to remove fully, so it’s important to use the right mould removers to ensure that you get rid of all the spores. We recommend using products like Wet and Forget Concentrate Moss & Mould Remover, Bio-Shield® Surface Treatment or 30 Seconds Outdoor Cleaner with Power Sprayer.

Hand Cleaning with Broom/Brush
One of the best and most simple ways to clean your cement rendering is by using a dry stiff broom or brush to scrub the dirt away and then hosing down the excess grime as you go.
Moss and Algae Removal
Over time, moss and algae can spread and grow on rendered surfaces. This causes discolouration and ageing. There are multiple ways to get rid of moss and algae. Some treatment options include: using a pressure washer, using a half-water and half-vinegar solution in a spray bottle, or buying a cleaning solution like Bio-Shield® Surface Treatment.
