While rendered surfaces result in a clean, aesthetically pleasing look, some people prefer to add a textured finish to the final look (known as a texture coating). A textured wall can add visual interest and extra protection from the elements. There are various ways to add texture to a rendered surface finish; there are already mixed paints that contain a textured effect, or you can manually add a texture yourself.

What kind of textures are available, and how are they applied?

Bagging/Patterned Finish

Bagging is a type of render and refers to a textured mixture that can be applied to an internal or external brick wall. Bagging has both aesthetic and protective benefits.

Bagging is most often applied using a hessian bag or sack, but it can also be applied with a sponge or broom, which will give the surface a more medium-textured finish. Bagging highlights the imperfections found on the wall and helps protect your surfaces from the elements and from tear and wear.

To make the bagging mixture, sand, cement and lime are mixed together with water. If you add more water, it results in a thinner layer, while less water results in a thicker coat. Paint can be mixed into the mortar to create a coloured finish.

Trowel Finish

A trowel finish gives the render a smooth, dense finish. It is easy to apply, as all you need is a trowel, which you then skim over the final coat of the render to add the effect.

Decorative Cement Banding

Decorative Cement Banding involves raising the cement higher around doors and windows, which can then be painted with contrasting colours to make those features stand out.

Stucco Patterns/Finish

Stucco render is flexible and can be easily moulded into different shapes. It is also durable and aesthetically pleasing, making it a popular render choice for those who want to add details and patterns to their rendering finish.

Acrylic Render Textures

By using a trowel to apply acrylic render to an already-rendered surface, you can add a colour or tint to the render and can choose the textural finish, which ranges from smooth to semi-smooth or a rough texture.

Knockdown Texture

This texture is applied by using a trowel to add a joint compound and then smoothing it out with a drywall knife, which results in a mottled look.

Popcorn Texture

Refers to when a thick-textured render is added to a surface with a roller or trowel. It is an effective way to add insulation and to hide any imperfections found on the wall.

Orange Peel Texture

Occurs when you apply an acrylic texture mix with a special texture sprayer. It gives the wall a bumpy appearance.

Benefits of Texture Coating

The benefits of texture coating include:

  • Wide variety of textures to choose from: There are many texture options to choose from to suit all homes and tastes. From subtle effects to more obvious textures, different colours and patterns.
  • Added protection: A textured layer can protect surfaces from the elements, dust and debris build-up, cracks and corrosion.
  • Decorative: It adds a long-lasting decorative element to a surface, which adds to the aesthetic appeal of your home.
  • Easy to maintain: As they are durable, a textured coating does not need much maintenance apart from the occasional touch-up or cleaning.
