Rendering Tools and Equipment Guide
Having the right tools and equipment can make all the difference in how successful your rendering job is. Some people may think they’re well-prepared but realise at the last minute that they don’t have all the right equipment on hand, which may push back their construction or renovation timeline.
These tools assist in your personal safety and help protect your home. They also help prepare the wall, apply the render, and give the render a smooth and neat finish.
Continue reading to learn more about the essential tools and equipment you’ll need for your rendering job to ensure you have everything you need.
Safety First
Safety Glasses/Goggles
Safety glasses/goggles will stop debris or render mixture splashes from getting into your eyes. There is nothing more annoying than having irritated eyes.
Gloves
Gloves will protect your hands from any chemical splashes or spills and give you a better grip on the tools you are handling.
Dust Mask
A dust mask is important to have on hand while you clean and prepare the wall for render. Nobody likes breathing in dust and airborne particles.
Protective Overalls/Clothing
Wear protective overalls/clothing to protect your clothes from getting any render on them.
Closed Shoes
Wear closed-in shoes to protect your feet from falling tools or rendering splatter.
Window Covers and Drop Sheets
Use window covers and drop sheets to protect your windows, plants and surrounding area against any render splashes.
Preparation Tools
Stiff-bristled or wire brush
Use a stiff-bristled or wire brush to remove loose debris like dirt, dust, spiderwebs or old paint from the wall’s surface.
Detergent or Soap
Use a mild detergent or soap to scrub away any stubborn grime or stains on the walls.
Hose or Pressure Washer
In most cases, a standard garden hose should be effective enough to wash away all the loose debris. However, if you have a lot of debris that refuses to come away from the wall, you may need to resort to a more powerful pressure washer.
Mixing Tools
Mixing Bucket
A mixing bucket gives you a safe and spacious enough space to mix your render until it is the right consistency.
Mixing Drill Or Electric Mixer
A mixing drill is a fast and effective way to mix your render. It is mostly used on larger construction projects.
Mixing Paddle
A paddle made from strong wood or metal allows you to manually and easily mix the render mixture without getting your arms sore.
Application and Finishing Touches
Trowels
Trowels are definitely among the most essential tools you need to apply the render to the surface. We recommend using different sizes and shapes to make the process easier and ensure the render is applied smoothly.
Here are some of the different trowel types we recommend:
- Stainless Steel Trowel: A stainless steel towel can be multipurpose. It gives your render a smoother finish and is also great to use on basecoats and thin and thick coat renders.
- Corner Trowel: Used to evenly distribute the render around corners to achieve a seamless finish.
- Finishing Trowel: Ensures a smooth and seamless finish.
Hawk
A flat tool that is used to hold and then transfer the render onto the trowel.
Floats
Floats are used to ensure a neat and smooth surface. It fills holes and removes any imperfections. They are usually made from stainless steel or plastic.
Here are the different types of floats that can be used:
- Sponge Float: A sponge float can be used on the basecoat to smooth out any marks left by the trowel. This tool is especially useful if you’re using thin render layers or textured renders.
- Render Float: Ensures that your render has a smooth and even finish.
Extras
- Cleaning Supplies (Broom, dustpan, etc): No matter how prepared you are, there will always be a little bit of a mess left over. But if you have cleaning supplies nearby, you’ll be able to clean up quickly.
- Spray bottle: Keep water in a spray bottle on hand, as your render needs a little splash of water every now and then to ensure that it doesn’t dry out too quickly and to allow for a smooth finish.
- Texturing Tools: If you want to add texture to your render, there are different types of trowels, combs, brushes, and other tools available that can give you the finish you are looking for.
