Wall rendering is the process of placing a layer of material like cement, silicone or acrylic onto a stone, concrete or brick surface. Rendering a surface isn’t always easy, which is why it’s best to leave it to the professionals, however, if you’re set on doing it yourself, there are some important things to consider before you get started.

Continue reading to find out more about the common mistakes to avoid when rendering your home.

Not Preparing the Wall Properly

Before you begin the process of wall rendering, it’s essential to prepare the wall or surface beforehand. This includes cleaning the surface from any debris or dirt. Any bumps on the surface also need to be smoothed over.

Not Protecting Your Surroundings

Rendering is messy and its easy for the render mixture to accidentally splash onto your surroundings. Cover up the surrounding areas with plastic or old bed sheets to protect them from being covered in the rendering mixture.

Improper Proportion of Rendering Material

If there is too little or too much rendering material it can cause problems during application. If the proportions are off, the render may not cover any cracks correctly or bind with the walls properly, resulting in an uneven, messy looking surface.

Lack of Force During Application

The process of rendering a surface requires some extra force unlike painting a wall. This force is needed so that the rendering mixture can bind well and stick onto the wall and stay in place.

Not Finishing the Edges Properly

The edges of a wall can sometimes be overlooked when rendering a surface, however, it can make a big difference to the appearance of the wall. Use a trowel or brush to smooth out the edges and make them neat and even. This adds to the overall appearance of the wall and makes it look like a more professional job.

Not Allowing Enough Time for the Render to Dry

Rendering needs time to dry properly. The render should be left to dry for at least 72 hours (three days). If the render isn’t allowed to dry and cure for an appropriate amount of time, it could lead to the render cracking or peeling off.

Not Using a Bonding Agent

When rendering a surface, it’s important to use a bonding agent so that the render can bond with the wall. Without a bonding agent, the render can peel and crack.

Too Much Sealant

Sealant is a substance that is used to stop materials from absorbing any liquid or moisture. Some people believe that rendering only works well if there is a lot of sealant used. This is not necessarily true as using too much sealant can altar the composition of the rendering material. One coat of sealant is usually enough.

While we understand that some people may prefer to render a surface themselves, we recommend calling a professional to do it for you. This will save you time and effort, and may even save you money (if you have to reapply the render due to doing a bad job the first time).
