What Causes Damage to Your Rendered Walls?
It is normal for rendered walls to become cracked and worn down over the years due to being exposed to the elements. Certain types of rendering (especially cement rendering) is thick and has no give to it. This makes it easy for cracks to appear in a rendered wall over time.
Some other factors that may damage your rendered walls include:
- Moisture becoming trapped in the wall
- Applying render during poor weather conditions
- If the building structure has damage
- Failing to seal the junctions
How to Repair and Touch Up Rendered Walls
The easiest way to repair damaged or worn-down rendered walls includes the following steps:
Step 1) Check wall
Using a utility knife, cut a small x into the wall and cover it with sticky tape. Peel the tape off, and if there is paint on the tape, then the wall needs to touched up.
Step 2) Remove old rendering
Before any touch-ups can be made, it is important to remove any old render down to the wall’s surface by using a claw hammer or chisel. This will leave bare patches of wall that will need to be left to air out before being covered again.
Step 3) Clean the wall
Once all the old render has been removed, use a brush and hose and go over the wall, removing any spider webs and debris.
Step 4) Apply acrylic sealant
Apply acrylic sealant to the little cracks to seal them up.
Step 5) Apply a bonding agent
Apply a bonding agent to the wall, following the mixing and usage instructions. This will help the render stick to the wall’s surface and prevent the moisture from being sucked out.
Step 6) Apply first coat of render
Following the mixing instructions, make up the first coat of render and apply it to the wall using a trowel and hawk. Ensure that you mix the new render into the old one and blend it in as much as possible (although it won’t blend completely seamlessly).
Step 7) Apply second coat of render
After leaving the first coat to dry and settle for at least a few hours, it’s time to mix up the second coat. The second coat should be thicker than the first coat. Push it into the wall using a trowel and hawk once again.
Step 8) Apply finishes
After letting the second coat of render dry, it’s time to apply any finishes (patterns or colours) you want.
It’s important to repair your damaged rendered wall as soon as possible so that no serious damage is done to the building’s structure. Although it’s possible to fix a rendered wall yourself, we recommend hiring a professional to do it for you. This will save you money and time in the long run.
